Sailing and Motor Yachts in Mahogany and Teak

Planking

We began with the planking of the 12-metre R-Yacht according to plan, in June 2004.

From the keel to the top

The Anitra is planked from the bottom upwards - from the keel to the deck.

To do this, every area for the plank must first be measured out using a thin measuring rod. You can see this in the left of this photo as a light-coloured piece of wood. Then, outside the hall, a strip of wood is sawn from the mahogany trunk according to those measurements.

You can see in the right of the photo that the planks are first affixed to the steel and wooden frames using clamps.
Once the desired shape has been achieved, the planks are fixed to the frames with copper rivets. These 6 mm rivets are hammered through the wooden frame but not yet riveted.
The planks are fixed to the steel frames using M10 countersunk thread screws.

With swing

Each plank must be fitted exactly onto the plank below and to the constantly changing three-dimensional bends of the hull.
Here you can see how the boat builder is planing the bevels on one of the planks.
Each plank usually needs to be planed several times on the work bench and requires many adjustments on the hull.

Perfect fit

In the bottom half of the photo, you can see how the new planks must be twisted in all three dimensions, in order to fit optimally onto the framework.

Because the curvature changes at each height, each plank is a one-of-a-kind. Because the planks have a thickness of 40 mm, fitting them onto the frames requires enormous effort.
